Hardware Upgrade - Core Router - core1.ffm2.combahton.net, scheduled 3 months ago

We are going to replace the current routing stack with a more powerful stack consisting of two Juniper QFX5100-48S. The upgrade will be carried out at the 18th October 2019, starting at 11:30 pm. Our upgrade plan consists of the following steps:

  1. We will turn the new gear in operation and create a port-channel with all v-lans between both old and new stack
  2. Once the port-channel is active, we will re-plug all uplink ports from the old to the new core causing a maximum downtime of ~5-10 minutes per customer
  3. After replugging all the ports to the new gear, we will switch the routing (BGP Sessions) from the old to the new core - this will cause a downtime of additional 5-10 minutes per customer
  4. We will carry out last checks if the new gear behaves well, if something goes wrong we can still switch back to routing over the old core

We do expect a total downtime of 30 minutes per customer if everything works as planned. However, we do announce a maintenance timeframe from 11:30 pm till 19.10.2019 01:00 am. Please expect, that in the worst case the maintenance may take longer as 30 minutes. Due to our experience with such upgrades, we are confident that the maintenance will not take longer than 30 minutes.

Affected customers will be informed by email at least 14 days before the planned work happens. In case you are unsure, if your service is affected, please open a ticket with our customer service.
Update 01:18: The upgrade has been carried out successfully, according to our analysis all customers and systems are fully back online after a cumulated downtime of less than 20 minutes.
